VOLVO OCEAN RACE 2011-2012
Lisbon will host in June 2012 the end of the transatlantic stage of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 - a race that is considered the official Sailing Race Around the World. The elite of the sport goes through the Portuguese capital, in an event jointly organized by João Lagos Sports and the City of Lisbon.
Lisbon and Portugal are to be congratulated! It was a complex application process - «and completely driven behind the scenes of the gods for over a year until the announcement of victory, as is our prerogative», says João Lagos - which was attended by 34 cities in Europe, but the Portuguese capital due to its maritime history, extraordinary conditions for the practice of sailing and track record in organizing major events, was chosen to host the important 'Stopover' that will bring the fleet of the Volvo Ocean Race from the United States of America to the 'Old Continent'.
«Portugal is a country of sailors who gave new worlds to the world and its capital Lisbon was the starting point for that fabulous saga of Discovery», underlines António Costa, mayor of Lisbon, «a city of historic vocation as transatlantic could only be associated the greatest ocean adventure of modern times - is with great honor and pride that we integrate the global itinerary of the Volvo Ocean Race».
After Expo '98, the Tennis Masters Cup Lisboa 2000, Euro 2004 and the Lisbon-Dakar and other events, the transatlantic stage of the Volvo Ocean Race will once again put the name of Portugal in the first world level: «It is very important to have Lisbon as a city in our stopovers. It has excellent conditions for the practice of sailing and racing 'inport' is certainly spectacular. After the rigors of crossing the Atlantic it will be a pleasure to get to the Portuguese capital», says Knut Frostad, CEO of Volvo Ocean Race.
